After four years of post-graduate dental school education, an oral and
maxillofacial surgeon completes an additional four years of intensive,
hospital based surgical residency training. Oral surgery residents spend
time rotating through related medical fields such as internal medicine,
general surgery, anesthesiology, plastic surgery and emergency medicine.
Upon graduation from the University of Alabama School of Dentistry in
1972, Dr. W. "Ron" McIlwain, D.M.D., acted as chief resident of Oral
and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Alabama in Birmingham.
He stays very active in his profession and involved in numerous organizations
including the 6th District Dental Society and the American Association
of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He is a member of the DCH Regional
medical staff, where he has previously served as Chief of Dental Services,
and Healthsouth of Tuscaloosa. Dr. McIlwain has approximately 22 years
of experience in field of oral and implant surgery.
Dr. J. "Terry" Carlson, D.M.D, M.D., is a native of Tuscaloosa. He graduated
as an OKU Dental Honorary from the University of Alabama School of Dentistry
in 1982 and with honors from Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Alabama
School of Medicine in 1983. He is active member of the 6th Dental Society
and the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He
is also an advisor on the State of Alabama Anesthesia Certification
Committee.
Dr. James "Jim" Link, D.D.S. attended undergraduate school at the University
of Notre Dame. In 1986, he graduated with honors from the University
of Illinois Dental College. Dr. Link did his Oral and Maxillofacial
Surgical residency at Vanderbuilt University. He is currently involved
in numerous organizations including Fellow American Association of Oral
and Maxillofacial Surgeons, Diplomate of American Board of Oral and
Maxillofacial Surgery, Member of the Alabama Society of Oral and Maxillofacial
Surgeons, a member of the American and Alabama Dental Associations, Co-Director of DCH Regional Implant Study Group.
Dr. S. "Craig" Fairburn, D.M.D., M.D. is a native of Mississippi. He is a summa cum laude graduate of the University of Mississippi School of Dentistry and a graduate of the University of Alabama School of Medicine. Dr. Fairburn completed his internship in General Surgery and residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at UAB Hospital in Birmingham. He is a member of the American Dental Association, the Americal Medical Association, the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the Alabama Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.
University Oral and Facial Surgery staffs RN's and LPN's. Our nurses are trained and experienced in office anesthesia and advanced life-saving techniques BLS and ACLS.
