Instructions Patient's Bill of Rights
PRE-OPERATIVE SEDATION INSTRUCTIONS
-
You MUST NOT have anything
to eat or drink after midnight before surgery or at
least six hours prior to surgery time, if scheduled
in the afternoon. You may take your normal medications
and your surgery prescribed medications with no more
than four (4) ounces of water the morning of surgery.
If you are a diabetic, please ask your doctor regarding
the dosage of your insulin and bring your home glucometer
with you. If you use respiratory inhaler, please bring
it with you.

You MUST bring someone
with you to remain in the waiting room during your surgery.
You will need this person to drive you home and stay
with you for the rest of the day. You will be drowsy
and not able to drive or operate heavy machinery for
24 hours.

Wear comfortable, loose
clothing.

DO NOT WEAR any of the
following on the day of surgery: contact lenses, heavy
make-up, excessive jewelry, large earrings, fingernail
polish or acrylic nails. - Smoking is not advised for
two days before and two days after depending on the
type of surgery you have. It can cause delayed healing,
infection, or dry socket.

Fill any prescriptions
one week prior to surgery. Follow prescription directions
carefully.

Plan to be off work or
school for two or three days depending on the type surgery
you have. Excuses are available upon request.

Prepare to be on a liquid/soft
diet for at least two (2) days after surgery. (jello,
ice-cream, pudding, yogurt, strained/cream soups, Ensure,
Gatorade)

Be prepared for ice packs
for first 24 hours after surgery.

Additional instructions
will be given to accompanying caretaker. Care package
will be given with instructions.
